Whether your car was broken into, you were in an accident, or your car was stolen, the number one thing you are grateful for is car insurance.
But finding insurance that covers things like lost money, mobile phones and credit cards or provides you with a courtesy car after an accident isn’t as easy as we think according to Which?.
The consumer group reviewed 49 policies from various insurers and discovered numerous gaps in coverage which can be found in the fine print, according to the Hull Daily Mail.

While nearly all policies had some sort of personal effects coverage – four in 10 did not cover lost or stolen cellphones.
They also found “surprising” exclusions for courtesy cars and that only about a quarter of policies will pay for someone to recover illegal clamping or towing charges.
Only three out of 10 insurers will also help with the legal costs of cloning a car’s license plate.
Almost all policies provide courtesy car cover as standard – but only a fifth offer a temporary replacement vehicle if someone’s vehicle is stolen, and only a fifth do so if it is written off.
Most policies offer options to upgrade this feature to make it more comprehensive, but drivers shouldn’t take full coverage for granted.
Jenny Ross, which one? The editor of Money, said: ‘Our research shows that motorists risk facing hefty bills when things go wrong because a lot of policies don’t cover the incidents or property you might expect.
“With the very high cost of living, this means car problems could be disastrous for people on low incomes or with limited savings.”
Seven out of 10 policies offer help in case someone fills their gas tank with the wrong fuel, but only one in five will help both empty the tank and repair the engine.

Jenny continued: “We urge drivers to read the fine print. If you’re comparing two similarly priced policies, the bills you can rack up from falling foul of car insurance loopholes could dwarf the extra amount you’d pay. for the most expensive blanket. .
“Anyone who isn’t happy with how their insurer has handled a claim should always shop around when it’s time to renew.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers said: “Every day, car insurers pay out £22million in claims to private car insurance customers, with 99% of all claims paid.
“Insurers remain committed to ensuring good value for money cover and want drivers to understand exactly what they are being covered for.
“We urge motorists to check the extent of cover provided and speak to their motor insurer if in doubt.”
